Nato a London nel 1688, figlio di un ricco mercante cattolico, gli furono interdette a causa della religione scuole regolari. Studiò privatamente. Soffriva di tubercolosi ossea, e l'eccesso di studio compromise maggiormente la sua salute. Amico di Swift, Gay, Arbuthnot, fece parte del circolo di letterati che aveva aderito all'"Arte poetica" di Boileau. Frequentò la società ele gante londinese. Sua fiamma segreta fu per anni la brillante lady Wortley Montagu. Dal 1718, dopo la fortunata versione in distici dell'"Iliade" che gli fece guadagnare un sacco di soldi, si sta bilì in una splendida villa a Twickenham [Middlesex], dove tra visite di amici e ammiratori, continuò l'attività di studioso fi no alla morte, avvenuta nel 1744. Elegante prova giovanile in "heroic couplets" sono le Pastora li (Pastorals, 1709). Contemporaneo il poemetto La foresta di Windsor (Windsor forest, pubbl.1713). Poema didattico è il Saggio sulla critica (Essay on critism, 1711) in cui codificò le regole letterarie di cui diede esempio con Il rapimento del ricciolo (The rape of the lock, 1712). Del 1717 è la pubblicazione delle Poesie (Poems). Oltre all'"Iliade" (1715-1720), coordinò la traduzione dell'"Odissea" (1725-1726): essa fu infatti fatica in gran parte di collaboratori stipendiati. Anonimo pubblicò il poema eroicomi co La zuccheide (The dunciad, 1728), arguta e ingegnosa satira. Scrisse inoltre i quattro Saggi morali (Moral essays, 1731- 1735) e il Saggio sull'uomo (Essay on man, 1733-1734). Pope fu la figura poetica dominante, portavoce e critico at tento dell'epoca augustea, le cui linee erano date dalla preva lenza dell'intelletto sulla fantasia e l'enunciazione di canoni di giudizio morale e estetico come unici validi. Ne "Il rapimento del ricciolo" condensa con abilità i precetti estetici nelle volute allessandrine dell'arte rococò, dando una elegante rappresentazione satirica, fatta di sorridente indulgenza, di un mondo effimero e galante. Il suo non è solo uno scherzo galante: i toni del discorso sanno variare dall'ironia alla solennità burlesca, dall'umorismo tenero alla impalpabile malinco nia. La stessa maestria verbale è nella traduzione di Homeros, improntata a grandiosità lirica. Nei "Saggi morali" usa un linguaggio semplice, secondo l'idea le di squisita naturalezza e spontaneità che fu proprio di Pope e del periodo della restaurazione (1660-1700).
