Biografia Charles Kingsley

Charles Kingsley nacque a Holne [Devonshire] nel 1819 (morì a Eversley [Hampshire] nel 1875), sacerdote anglicano, fu uno dei fondatori del 'socialismo cristiano' che riprendeva in chiave religiosa parte del programma cartista di rivendicazioni sociali. Storica fu la sua aspra polemica contro Newman. Kingsley scrisse saggi, sermoni, liriche, libri educativi. I suoi romanzi Fermento (Yeast, 1848) e Alton Locke (1850) sono a sfondo sociale, e hanno intenti didattici e umanitari. Più felici i romanzi storici A occidente! (Westeward ho!, 1855) e Hereward la sentinella (Hereward the wake, 1866). Kingsley fu uno dei pochi ecclesiastici a accettare la teoria darwiniana dell'evoluzione della specie, cui si ispira un suo noto libro per l'infanzia, "I bambini acquatici" (The water-babies, 1863).
