David Bailey (Londra 1938) è uno dei piu noti fotografi britannici; i suoi scatti hanno animato il mondo della musica e della moda, contribuendo a dar forma alla cosidetta Swinging London.
Dopo essersi arruolato nella Royal Air Force, Bailey scopre il lavoro di Henri Cartier Bresson, ed inizia la sua sorprendente avventura nel mondo della fotografia. Inizia a lavorare con David Olin, abituale fornitore della rivista Quenn Magazin; seguono le esperienze di moda a Parigi e l'attività di free-lance per il periodico inglese Vogue.
Nel 1960 Bailey è già un eclettico ed affermato fotografo; tra i suoi numerosi ritratti si trovano musicisti ed attori, dai Rolling Stones a Peter Sellers, dai Beatles a Catherine Deneuve, moglie del fotografo fino al 1972.
Proprio negli anni '60 Bailey è protagonista di quella tendenza culturale nota con il nome Swinging London; attraverso i suoi scatti Bailey documenta la realtà inglese ed il suo incredibile mutamento dopo gli anni di austerità del dopoguerra.
In questa rivoluzione culturale che ha animato Londra la fotografia di Bailey diventa documento e monumento di questo incredibile momento e dei soggetti che lo hanno animato; i suoi scatti sono minimalisti, sempre in bianco e nero per esaltare nella leggerezza dei toni il contrasto dei valori.
Nel 1965 l'artista pubblica il suo primo libro di ritratti, David Bailey's Box of Pin-ups, dove compaiono, tra gli altri, i ritratti di Mick Jagger, Michael Caine, Jane Birkin e i gemelli Reginald e Ronald Kray, due temibili criminali che hanno dominato la malavita londinese negli anni '50-'60.
Nel corso degli anni l'artista ha pubblicato diversi libri, passando dai ritratti di moda alla musica; ha anche diretto spot pubblicitari e documentari.
Nel 1984 è stata organizzata una grande retrospettiva dedicata all'artista, presso il Manhattan's International Center of Photography.
Nel 1997 Bailey ha pubblicato David Bailey's Rock and Roll Heroes, dove i ritratti di Mick Jagger, The Who e John Lennon accompagnano quelli di Sting, Liam e Noel Gallagher e Dave Stewart.
Tra gli ultimi lavori dell'autore si ricordano le pubblicazioni If We Shadows, e Chasing Rainbows. I suoi ritratti continuano a raccontare il mondo della moda, la musica, lo sport ed altro ancora. L’autore vive e lavora negli Stati Uniti.
