David Hume (26 aprile 1711, Edimburgo - 25 agosto 1776, Edimburgo) era un filosofo e storico scozzese e, con Adam Smith e Thomas Reid, una delle figure più importanti dell'illuminismo scozzese. Molti considerano Hume come il terzo ed il più radicale degli British Empiricists (Empiricisti Britannici), dopo l'inglese John Locke ed l'Anglo - Irlandese George Berkeley; questo raggruppamento di Hume, Locke e Berkeley, benché tradizionale, ignora l'importante influenza su Hume di vari autori francofoni quale Pierre Bayle, così come le varie altre figure sulla scena intellettuale anglofona quali Isaac Newton, Samuel Clarke, Francis Hutcheson e Joseph Butler.
Gli storici generalmente considerano la filosofia di Hume come una forma radicale di scetticismo, ma molti commentatori hanno sostenuto che il suo naturalismo non ha meno importanza. La ricerca su Hume ha teso ad oscillare con l'andare del tempo fra coloro che danno risalto al lato scettico di Hume (quali Reid, Greene ed i positivisti logici) e coloro che danno risalto al lato naturalista (come Don Garrett, Norman Kemp Smith, Barry Stroud e Galen Strawson).
Nasce a Edimburgo secondogenito di un possidente di Ninewells nella Scozia meridionale. Nella stessa città intraprende gli studi di giurisprudenza, per compiacere alla famiglia. I sui veri ineressi erano la letteratura e la filosofia. I suoi debutti come avvocato a Bristol non vanno a buon fine e ben presto scelse di trasferirsi in Francia a La Flèche, dove vi resta tre anni dal 1734 al 1737 e dove scrive la sua opera più importante il Trattato sulla natura umana in tre volumi. I primi due pubblicati nel 1739 e l'ultimo nel 1740. Il primo volume tratta della conoscenza, il secondo dei sentimenti e l'ultimo del fondamento della morale. Questa opera non ottiene molto successo nonostante l'Estratto che ne riassume le idee, redatto dallo stesso Hume. Ritornato in Inghilterra pubblica nel 1742 la prima parte dei suoi Saggi morali e politici. Questa opera riceve una più favorevole accoglienza sia tra il pubblico che tra gli intellettuali, ma non è sufficiente per ottenere una cattedra di filosofia presso l'università di Edimburgo e nemmeno presso quella di Glasgow. Probabilmente la sua nomea di ateo e la strenua opposizione del suo più forte critico Thomas Reid sono all'origine di questa mancata nomina. Ritorna quindi sul continente e tra il 1745 e 1748, ottiene vari incarichi politici, tra cui quello di segretario del generale St.Clair, con cui visita le corti di Vienna e Torino. Nel 1748 pubblica a Londra la Ricerca sull'intelletto umano. Nel 1752 ottiene un posto di bibliotecario alla Facoltà degli avvocati di Edimburgo, con molto tempo a disposizione per comporre: la Storia d'Inghilterra da Giulio Cesare fino all'ascesa di Enrico VII e la Ricerca sui principi della morale. Nel 1757 pubblica la Storia naturale della religione dove con sorprendenti intuizioni cerca di sminuire il valore delle religioni monoteiste a favore del più malleabile e tollerante politeismo. Altro scritto pubblicato postomo su questo tema fu il Dialoghi sulla religione naturale pubblicato nel 1779. Nel 1763 diventa segretario del conte di Harftord ambasciatore d'Inghilterra a Parigi, dove vi rimane fino al 1766. Tornato in Inghilterra dove ebbe l'opportunità di ospitare Jean-Jacques Rousseau, frequentazione che finì in una rottura per incompatibilità di carattere. Oramai ricco termina serenamente la sua esistenza il 25 agosto 1776.
