John Marston è nato nel 1873 su una barca diretta verso New York City. Suo padre era un' immigrato scozzese e la madre era un prostituta, morta durante il parto. Nel 1881, il padre di John muore in una rissa in un saloon. John aveva solo 8 anni e viene mandato in uno orfanotrofio e lì incontra Abigail, insieme scappano e si uniscono alla banda di Dutch, che si prende cura di loro, insegnando loro a leggere, sparare e portarli sulla via del Selvaggio West.
John Marston è un bandito e insieme a l'olandese Van Der Linde, Bill Williamson, e Javier Escuella, commetteva rapine in banca, attacchi ai treni, omicidi e altri crimini vari in tutto il paese. Marston giustifica le sue azioni dicendo che loro rubavano ai ricchi che avevano troppo e davano ai poveri.
Dopo essere stato gravemente ferito in una rapina in banca nel 1908 è stato lasciato morire da Bill Williamson e gli altri suoi compagni, Marston ne aprofitta per ritirarsi dalla vita di fuorilegge. Cerca di dimenticare il passato, è fugge insieme a Abigail. In seguito si sposano e si comprano un Ranch a Beecher Hope, hanno un figlio di nome Jack Marston. Marston ha anche avuto una figlia, ma morta per cause sconosciute.
Marston rimane comunque un abile pistolero e un ottimo cacciatore, fermo ancora ai vecchi modi occidentali, in un mondo che sta cambiando con l' evoluzione della tecnologia.
