John Wainwright nato a Leeds (Yorkshire) nel 1921, Wainwright ha combattuto durante il secondo conflitto mondiale nelle forze aeree e, a guerra finita, è entrato nella polizia dove èrimasto per vent’anni, laureandosi nel frattempo in legge all’Università di Londra.Cinque anni prima di andare in pensione ha rassegnato le dimissioni dal corpo perdedicarsi a tempo pieno all’attività di scrittore.Il suo primo romanzo lo ha dato alle stampe nel 1965. Da anni vive con la moglie a Birkdale (Lancashire). Ama molto camminare per le strade di campagna, il cricket e la musica, in particolare il jazz tradizionale.
