La madre è la collaboratrice spirituale di Sri Aurobindo.
Sri Aurobindo, uno tra i più importanti filosofi e maestri spirituali dell'India moderna. Nasce il 15 agosto 1872 a Calcutta, studia in Inghilterra dall'età di sette anni, dove fu educato essenzialmente da insegnanti occidentali.
Torna in India nel 1892 alla morte di suo padre. Impara il sanscrito per poter comprendere i testi sacri indiani e si dedica quindi allo yoga secondo i suoi principi, facendo cinque, sei ore al giorno di esercizi di respirazione e concentrazione. In questo periodo incontra anche dei maestri che gli insegnano la meditazione.
Tutta la vita successiva di Aurobindo fu dedicata ad applicare la conoscenza spirituale alla vita concreta e a quella psicofisica, per arrivare a trasformare la vita stessa e la realtà esteriore. Questa energia di Verità e Coscienza che Sri Aurobindo chiama "sopramentale" è la sola energia che può produrre una trasformazione dinamica davvero integrale e irreversibile della materia.
All'età di 29 anni Sri Aurobindo si sposa, ma sua moglie non saprà seguirlo nel suo cammino. Nel 1906 si trasferisce a Calcutta, nel cuore dell'agitazione politica, viene arrestato nel 1908, rimane in carcere per un anno, dove approfondisce ancora di più la meditazione.
Nel 1926, con l'aiuto di una collaboratrice spirituale, la Madre, fonda lo Sri Aurobindo Ashram. Sri Aurobindo lascia il corpo il 5 Dicembre 1950.
