Ross Macdonald è lo pseudonimo dello scrittore Canadese-Americano Kennetch Millar.
E' nato il 13 dicembre del 1915 a Los Gatos, California, vicino a San Jose nel 1915.
Ha sposato Margaret Sturm nel 1938.
Cominciò la sua carriera scrivendo per riviste Pulp.
Mentre studiava all'università del Michigan, completò il suo primo romanzo, The dark storm, nel 1944.
A quel tempo scriveva con il nome John Macdonald, per evitare la confusione con sua moglie, che stava ottenendo il proprio successo con il nome Margaret Millar.
Si laureò nel 1951.
Introdusse il famoso detective Lew Archer in The moving Target del 1949.
Da questo romanzo venne tratto il film del 1966, con Paul Newman, Harper.
All'inizio degli anni '50 tornò in California, dove rimase per trent'anni a Santa Barbara, il luogo dove sono ambientati la maggiorparte dei suoi libri.
Morì in California nel 1983.
