Stephen Gray è nato nel 1941 a Città del Capo, in Sudafrica, da una famiglia di origini britanniche. Ha insegnato per molti anni letteratura nelle Università sudafricane ma anche negli Stati Uniti, ed ha soggiornato in vari paesi del mondo, diventando un intellettuale cosmopolita e uno scrittore versatile oltre che assai prolifico. Attualmente vive ed opera a Johannesburg come scrittore e giornalista free lance. Commediografo importante, ha dedicato particolare attenzione al teatro e al suo mondo dal punto di vista sia critico sia creativo. Suo è lo splendido lavoro Schreiner: A One-Woman Play (1983) in cui portò in scena la grande scrittrice sudafricana. La sua funzione di critico sempre attento agli eventi della scena sudafricana lo ha portato ad essere un importante testimone della vita letteraria del suo paese, mentre il suo cosmopolitismo gli ha permesso di collocare il Sudafrica nel quadro di un mondo più vasto.
