William Ford Gibson nasce nel 1948 a Conway, nel South Carolina, quale figlio unico di un imprenditore che ha raggiunto il benessere durante la costruzione dell'impianto Oak Ridge, dove è stata fabbricata la prima bomba atomica.
Dopo la morte del padre trascorre la propria infanzia con la madre in una piccola cittadina delle montagne del sud-ovest della Virginia.
A 19 anni, dopo aver studiato in un collegio del sud dell'Arizona, lascia gli Stati Uniti per trasferirsi in Canada, a Toronto, evitando così di essere arruolato durante la Guerra del Vietnam. Studia Letteratura Inglese alla British Columbia University di Vancouver, laureandosi nel 1977. Dopo aver intrapreso diversi mestieri, giusto per "farsi un'idea di come vada la vita", inizia a scrivere professionalmente.
Il suo primo racconto, Fragments of a Hologram Rose, viene pubblicato nel 1977, sulla rivista semi-professionale Unerth. Nonostante sia ancora piuttosto acerbo, descrive comunque già molto bene l'immaginario del Cyberpunk: in esso l'autore descrive infatti un futuro decadente, caratterizzato da guerre civili, caos economico e scontri tra bande di delinquenti, dove la gente trova una pace apparente soltanto in un mondo virtuale ottenuto con l'ausilio dell'elettronica. Quattro anni più tardi, nel 1981, appare sul numero di maggio della rivista Omni, Johnny Mnemonic, incentrato sulla figura di un corriere di nome Johnny impegnato a salvare la propria testa dalla Yakuza. Johnny è infatti un corriere informatico ed usa il proprio cervello per il trasporto e la consegna di pericolosi files. Nel 1995 verrà tratto dal racconto l'omonimo film interpretato da Keanu Reeves, in verità poco aderente alla versione cartacea.
Nel resto degli anni Ottanta Gibson scrive parecchi altri racconti che tuttavia passano per lo più inosservati. Il grande successo arriva solo nel 1984 con la pubblicazione del suo primo romanzo, Neuromacer, l'opera che più di ogni altra ha contribuito a diffondere il Cyberpunk presso il grande pubblico. Il libro ottiene tutti i premi letterari del genere e diviene subito un caso letterario. La trama narra le vicende di un cow-boy dell'Interfaccia di nome Case, il quale, con l'aiuto di una donna di nome Molly (già apparsa in Johnny Mnemonic) ed un misterioso ex-militare di nome Armitage, viene riabilitato alla sua vecchia attività di "ladro d'informazioni". Stimolato dal successo del libro Gibson continua a scrivere. Nel 1986 esce Count Zero e nel 1988 Mona Lisa Overdrive che, insieme a Neuromancer, costituiscono un'ideale trilogia tematica. E con essi si chiude anche il Gibson amato dai più: Mona Lisa Overdrive rappresenta infatti l'ultima pietra dell'Old Cyberpunk. Nonostante anche i più recenti Virtual Light (1993), Idoru (1996) ed All Tomorrow's Parties (1999) abbiano ottenuto validi riconoscimenti sia di pubblico che di critica, queste opere non sono purtroppo qualitativamente paragonabili alla produzione anteriore dell'autore.
Gibson ha scritto anche una sceneggiatura, mai utilizzata, per Alien 3.
Attualmente vive a Vancouver assieme alla moglie Deborah Jean Thompson e i suoi due figli.
