William Wordsworth biografia

William Wordsworth Nato a Cockermouth [Cumberland] nel 1770, trascorse infanzia e prima giovinezza nel Lake District, a contatto con la natura, ciò che segnò indelebilmente la sua storia intima e poetica. Rimasto orfano di padre e madre, fu affidato a due zii. Frequentò un'ot- tima 'grammar school' nel centro rurale di Hawkshead e poi il Saint John's College di Cambridge. Si laureò nel 1791. Nel 1792 è in Francia: amico di Michel de Beaupuy, e innamorato di Annette Vallon da cui ebbe una figlia alla fine del 1792, fu sul punto di unirsi al partito dei giron- dini. La brusca partenza per l'Inghilterra fu certo imposta dalla fa- miglia. Fervente seguace del comunismo anarchico di W. Godwin, fu presto deluso di fronte alle stragi del Terrore e all'evoluzione espansionistica della politica francese. Nel 1795 si stabilì con la sorella Dorothy a Racedown [Dorset], e incontrò Coleridge. Ne nacque un sodalizio leg- gendario: Coleridge chiarì all'amico la natura della sua vocazione poe- tica, mentre Wordsworth con il suo temperamento riflessivo e risoluto agì da stimolo su Coleridge. Nel 1797 Wordsworth e Dorothy andarono a vivere vicino a Coleridge, ad Alfoxden Park [Somerset]. Nel 1799 si stabilì con Dorothy nel Lake District a Grasmere [Westmorland]. Nel 1802 sposò un'anima d'adolescenza, Mary Hutchin- son. Gli anni dal 1805 al 1815 furono segnati dal distacco di Wordsworth da Coleridge, e dall'adesione alle idee conservatrici. Nel 1813 ottenne un impiego come "distributore di francobolli per il Westmorland", e si stabilì definitivamente a Rydal Mount [Westmorland]. Nel 1843 fu nominato 'poeta laureato'. Morì a Rydal Mount nel 1850. Dopo alcune poesie giovanili, Wordsworth scrisse Una passeg giata di sera (An evening walk, 1793), e Scene descrittive (Descriptive sketches, 1793), entrambe in distici eroici e con forti influenze di moduli settecenteschi. L'incontro con Colerid- ge fu decisivo per una svolta nella sua pro- duzione poetica.
Tra il 1797 e il 1798 Wordsworth e Coleridge scrissero in blank-verse le Ballate liriche (Lyrical ballads) pubblicate anonime nel 1798, considerate oggi il manifesto del ro- manticismo inglese. La prima edizione comprendeva 19 liriche di Wordworth, tra cui Righe scritte sopra Tintern Abbey (Lines written above Tintern Abbey). Del 1798 è Peter Bell, pubblicato poi nel 1819, e una delle sue opere più importanti: Il preludio (The prelude) comple- tato nel 1805 e pubblicato postumo nel 1850, poema autobiografico in cui Wordsworth descrive la formazione della sua vita spirituale e poetica. Nelle sue intenzioni doveva essere l'introduzione a un poema filosofico dal titolo "Il recluso" (The recluse), di cui fu pubblicata anche un'altra parte, L'escursione (The excur- sion, 1814)
Tra le sue cose migliori sono anche: Poesie in due volumi (Poems in two volumes, 1807) in cui sono alcuni componimenti fa- mosi come "Ode all'immortalità" (Ode to immortality), "Ode al do- vere" (Ode to duty), "La mietitrice solitaria" (The solitary rea- per). La bianca colomba di Rylstone (The white doe of Rylstone, 1807) fu pubblicata nel 1815, è una poesia narrativa in sette canti che anticipa la maniera tarda di Wordsworth, rappresentata in particolare dai Sonetti ecclesiastici (Ecclesiastical son- nets, 1821) pubblicati nel 1822. Se Coleridge diede nelle "Ballate liriche" con la "Ballata del vecchio marinaio" l'inizio del movimento romanticista in Inghilterra, Wordsworth elaborò una lirica senza la quale non vi sa- rebbe stata la moderna poesia inglese. Apportò uno straordinario rinnovamento del linguaggio, con uno spostamento della tematica, facendosi interprete di quanto accadeva in europa, sia sul piano letterario che sociale. Wordsworth capovolse completamente il concetto di 'poetic diction', linguaggio poetico, trasformando anche la concezione della funzione della poesia che venne a identificarsi con l'espressione dell'emozione del poeta. Wordsworth definì la propria poesia come «emozione rivissuta in tranquillità». I versi austeri, purissimi, delle odi del primo periodo trasmettono al lettore la ver- tigine data dal «guardare fissamente» e dall'evocare istanti che sono vivibili da tutti, e quotidianamente, ma che solo il poeta è in grado di captare con precisione. L'emozione visiva dell' "Abbazia di Tintern" riflette l'affermazione di Wordworth per cui la vista è il più dispoti- co dei sensi.
L'aspetto meditativo e severo, presente in tutte le sue opere, domina nel periodo più tardo: con il rarefarsi dei momenti di percezione visio- naria, è il deliberato privilegiare in significato morale della propria visione. In parallelo all'abbandono degli ideali rivoluzionari: Shel- ley e Browning parlarono con rammarico della loro "guida perduta".
