La cit antique de Soada-Dionysias (Suwayda'), et la vingtaine de villages qui occupent la bordure nord-occidentale du Jebel al-'Arab ont livr de nombreux tmoignages de l'Antiquit. Plus de 250 inscriptions grecques et latines, entre le ier sicle avant notre re et le viiie sicle de notre re, illustrent les proccupations et les croyances des populations de ce qui constituait l'Auranitide antique. Invocations et offrandes aux dieux, constructions publiques et prives, honneurs dcerns des citoyens bienfaiteurs, pitaphes, inscriptions chrtiennes citant des versets bibliques ou commmorant la construction d'glises ne sont que quelques exemples de la varit des textes rassembls dans ce volume. The ancient city of Soada-Dionysias (Suwayda'), and the twenty villages which are on the north-western edge of the Jabal al-'Arab, gave a lot of testimonies from Antiquity. More than 250 Greek and Latin inscriptions from the 1st century BC to the 8th century AD, illustrate the concerns and beliefs of the people of the ancient Auranitis. Invocations and offerings to the gods, public and private buildings, honours bestowed on citizen benefactors, epitaphs, Christian inscriptions quoting biblical verses or commemorating the construction of churches are but a few examples of the variety of texts collected in this volume. |
