The authors detail six action research projects with multinational companies (Philips, Nestl, Sintetica, Sorgenia, Stolt Tankers, and Adidas) that were part of the project IDeaLs (Innovation and Design as Leadership), which explored the intersections between innovation, design, and leadership to reveal new insights and practices on how to make transformative innovation occur at the individual, organizational, and societal levels. They argue that the creation of shared meaning can be accelerated by seeking innovation within a socially orchestrated, design-like process, noting the role of engagement in innovation, and propose a model of design-driven dialogue for engaging people to make transformation happen. They describe innovation in the digital age; the relationship between innovation, design, and leadership; the neuroscience of engagement; objects that can aid in cultivating new ways of engaging and leading for transformative innovation; and the case studies and how they illustrate engaging and transforming the individual and the collective, and engaging people for transformation.
