Bernard Tschumi is well known for his urban projects both in Europe and in the United States. This book describes in detail the design process of the Lemer Student Center of Columbia University, located within a campus masterplanned by McKim, Mead & White. The Student Center provides a combined auditorium and assembly hall with a seating capacity of 1100 to 1500, dining facilities, lounges, meeting rooms, a bookstore, radio station, clubs and game rooms, administrative spaces, as well as expanded computer facilities for student use. Glass Ramps refers to "the hub", the main circulatory system with its suspended glass ramps; Glass Wall refers to the suspended glass plane of the hub. The building is nearing completion, opening in stages from September 1999. |
