Fritz Leiber Jr.( a volte ha usato lo pseudonimo Francis Lathrop) nacque a Chicago, nel 1910.
figlio di Fritz e Virginia Bronson Leiber, attori shakepeariani.
Studiò psicologia e fisiologia all'università di Chicago, alla scuola di Teologia di New York e trascorse alcune stagioni sul palcoscenico (1935-36) nella compagnia di suo padre.
Leiber lavorò come insegnante di arte drammatica e come editor della rivista Science Digest.
Leiber iniziò a scrivere narrativa nel 1939.
Amante del fantastico fin dalla giovinezza, Leiber fu probabilmente l'ultimo membro (in ordine di ammissione) del circolo letterario che si raccoglieva attorno ad H. P. Lovecraft.
Il primo successo di Leiber è del 1939, con la storia Two Sought Adventure, pubblicata dalla rivista Unknown; sarà la prima nella lunga serie di avventure di Fafhrd e del Gray Mouser.
E' stato membro della Science Fiction Writers of America.
E' morto il 5 settembre del 1992.
