Padre Thomas Keating è un monaco cistercense del monastero di San Benedetto a Snowmass, nel Colorado. È noto per essere un fautore della preghiera “di centratura”, una pratica individuale di silenzio contemplativo attraverso l’uso di una parola sacra (come “Dio”, “Gesù”, “pace”, “silenzio”, “apertura” o “presenza”) oppure un’immagine sacra (ad esempio, il riposo nelle braccia del Signore). Diversamente dal mantra, la parola o l’immagine non vengono ripetute continuamente, bensì considerate come punto focale al quale fare riferimento quando il consueto clamore dei pensieri diventa troppo insistente.
Padre Keating è anche l’autore di diversi libri, tra i quali Il mistero di Cristo e Invito all’amore. Nella metà degli anni Ottanta gettò le basi del programma Contemplative Outreach, il cui fine era dare informazioni sulla vita contemplativa non solo agli ordini monastici, ma a tutti i cristiani. Ciò veniva offerto attraverso ritiri intensivi della preghiera di centratura a Snowmass e in altri centri regionali affiliati.
Uno di questi centri è Chrysalis House, vicino al villaggio di Warwich, in mezzo alle colline boscose a circa ottanta chilometri a nord-ovest di New York.
