James Byron Dean (Marion, 8 febbraio 1931 – 30 settembre 1955) è stato un attore statunitense. L'importanza di Dean come icona culturale si riassume perfettamente nel titolo del suo film più celebre: Gioventù bruciata, in inglese Rebel Without a Cause, letteralmente "ribelle senza motivo", nel quale ricopre il ruolo del problematico ribelle adolescente Jim Stark. La sua estrema popolarità trova le sue radici in soli tre film: Dean morì a 24 anni e questi furono gli unici film in cui compare come protagonista.
La sua fama ha raggiunto i paesi di tutto il mondo, preservata intatta dalla precoce morte dell'attore. Viene ricordato come un seguace della filosofia del carpe diem e spesso come la quintessenza stessa della gioventù statunitense. Sebbene sia spesso considerato un personaggio la cui fama va ben al di là delle sue qualità di attore, è inesatto dire che Dean non era un bravo interprete. È stato il primo attore ad aver ottenuto una nomination postuma al Premio Oscar, ed è tuttora l'unico ad avere due nomination di questo tipo. A Dean fu conferito il Golden Globe per il miglior attore nel 1955.
