Henry Vaughan, poeta gallese nato a Newton St. Bridget (Galles meridionale) nel 1622 ed ivi defunto nel 1695. Dall'antica popolazione dei Siluri, abitanti della sua regione nativa, gli venne l'epiteto di Silurist. Dopo un esordio come autore di poesie scritte in modo brillante, la sua poetica risentì della profonda crisi religiosa, che trovò espressione nella raccolta Silex scintillans (1650 e, con aggiunte, 1655). Il tema più sentito dei suoi versi mistici (The retreate, Childehood, ecc.) è la nostalgica esaltazione dell'infanzia come periodo in cui l'anima è ancora in contatto con Dio.
Insieme col gemello Thomas (1621-1666) entrò nel 1638 a Jesus College, Oxford. Henry non si laureò a Oxford, ma si recò a Londra a studiare legge, proposito che venne frustrato dallo scoppio della guerra civile. Nel 1643 cominciò a esercitare la medicina a Brecknock, dove però non rimase a lungo, per fare ritorno al suo paese natio dove passò il resto della vita. Thomas nel 1647 divenne fellow al suo collegio di Oxford e si dedicò a speculazioni alchimistiche che egli chiamava magia divina; compose varie opere dove, tra molto di fantastico, si nota la stessa corrente mistica che informa l'opera poetica di Henry.
Nel 1646 Vaughan pubblicò Poems, with the tenth satyre of Juvenal englished, scritti in massima parte nella maniera brillante della scuola di Ben Jonson. Il secondo volume di versi, Olor Iscanus (dal fiume Usk), scritto nella stessa maniera del precedente e pronto fin dal 1647, fu rinnegato da Vaughan, travagliato da profonda crisi religiosa, e fu pubblicato senza il consenso dell'autore da suo fratello Thomas nel 1651. La crisi religiosa trovò espressione nei versi del volume Silex scintillans, dove è contenuta la più nota e la migliore delle sue poesie They are all gone into the world of light. Nel 1652 pubblicò un piccolo volume di meditazioni in prosa The Mount of Olives, seguito nel 1654 da Flores solitudinis. Le opere alchimistiche del fratello Thomas ci danno la chiave delle fantasie poetiche di Henry. In ultima analisi, la corrente di "magia naturale" cui i due fratelli appartenevano risaliva, attraverso il neoplatonismo fiorentino, a Platone, e l'influsso del Timeo è visibile nella più famosa delle sue poesie, The world. L'opera poetica di Vaughan, che ora occupa un posto di primo piano accanto a quella di G. Herbert e R. Crashaw, rimase praticamente sconosciuta fin verso la fine del sec. 18º, quando fu riscoperta da W. Wordsworth.
