Nato a Chicago nel 1932, John Jakes cominciò a scrivere professionalmente durante il suo anno all'università Northwestern , dove stava studiando recitazione.
A 18 anni vendette la sua prima storia per 25$.
Quel primo racconto cambiò l'intera direzione della sua vita.
Seguì il programma di scrittura creativa all'università DePauw e si laureò nel 1953.
Dopo la laurea lavorò per una industria farmaceutica, passando intere giornate a scrivere testi.
Durante la notte scriveva racconti passando in rassegna vari generi: mistero, western e scienza.
Nel marzo del 1973, Jakes cominciò a lavorare a The Bastard, primo di otto volumi del Kent Family Chronicles.
La serie che dipinge la storia americana attraverso le vite di questa famiglia e divenne un fenomeno di vendite per un intera decade.
Jakes è sposato con Rachel Ann Payne di Danville, Illinois, che incontrò alla DePauw. Hanno quattro figli e 11 nipoti.
Vivono tra la Sud Carolina e il Connecticut.
