John Marsden è nato il 27 settembre 1950 ed è diventato scrittore, mentre lavorava come insegnante.
Il suo primo libro “So Much To Tell You”, fu pubblicato nel 1987.
Da quel momento ha scritto o editato più di 40 libri, vendendo oltre 5 milioni di copie in tutto il mondo.
Dopo aver lasciato l’università Marsden ha sofferto di depressione e fu ricoverato presso un ospedale psichiatrico.
Marsden riconosce la sua permanenza nell’ospedale come un importante periodo della sua vita.
In seguito a questo periodo di sbandamento, nel 1978 Marsden decise di provare la carriera dell’insegnamento, accorgendosi che questa fosse da sempre la carriera che più gli si addiceva.
Pur lavorando alla prestigiosa Geelong Grammar School, Marsden prese la decisione di scrivere per i teenagers, tentando di colmare la sua insoddisfazione per gli studenti apatici verso la lettura.
Così scrisse “So Much To Tell You” in sole 3 settimane e il libro, pubblicato nel 1987, fu molto apprezzato dai teenagers, vendendo un gran numero di copie e vincendo numerosi premi.
Il libro di Marsden che ha raggiunto il più alto risultato di vendita è Tomorrow, When the War Began.
