Lee Smith è cresciuta sui monti Appalaci a sud della Virginia.
Dal 1968 ha pubblicato 9 romanzi e raccolte di racconti ed ha ricevuto diversi premi letterari.
L'autrice è nata nel 1944 a Grundy, Virginia, una piccola città mineraria nelle Blue Ridge Mountains.
Iniziò a scrivere fin da bambina nel negozio del padre, ascoltando le chiacchiere dei clienti e descrivendo il loro abbigliamento.
Il primo successo arrivò nel 1966. Sottopose il suo primo romanzo al concorso del libro del mese di Hollins.
Due anni dopo il romanzo, "The Last Day the Dog Bushes Bloomed" venne pubblicato da Harper & Row editore.
Dopo la laurea si sposò con un poeta e scrittore che accompagnò nei suoi spostamenti da un'università all'altra.
Cominciò a scrivere per i giornali locali senza avere molto tempo per scrivere.
Nel 1971 completò il suo secondo romanzo "Something in the Wind", che ricevette un buona accoglienza dalla critica.
Solo il su terzo romanzo "Fancy Strut" (1973) venne considerato dalla critica un capolavoro.
Lee Smith vive nel North Carolina con il marito Hal Crowther.
