Robert Owen (1771-1858) è il primo e il più significativo tra i socialisti utopisti. Comincia a lavorare a dieci anni come commesso di negozio a Londra; nel 1789 apre una piccola industria tessile. Il successo di questa gli permette di acquistare dieci anni dopo, nel 1799, le filande di New Lanark in Scozia.
La sua mentalità è strettamente legata alla sua esperienza di dipendente prima, e di capitano d'industria poi; si rende conto che il modello di self-made man teorizzato dagli economisti è un'astrazione, in quanto le condizioni ambientali non possono non influenzare gli individui: l'ambiente quindi deve essere costruito a servizio dell'uomo, prima di pensare a qualsiasi vantaggio economico, individuale e collettivo.
Owen sperimenta questa sua idea nella gestione delle filande di New Lanark, iniziata simbolicamente il 1° gennaio del 1800. Queste diventano una fabbrica modello grazie all'introduzione di nuovi macchinari, buoni salari, abitazioni salubri e alla costruzione presso la fabbrica un asilo infantile, il primo in tutta l'Inghilterra; una parte dei profitti industriali viene destinata al miglioramento delle condizioni di vita degli operai. Egli istituisce inoltre nel 1816 un singolare centro di servizio, chiamato Istituzione per la Formazione del Carattere.
