Samuel Taylor Coleridge nasce nel 1772 in un ridente villaggio tra le colline del Devon, il più giovane di dieci figli. Suo padre John è il pastore anglicano del paese e il giovane Samuel gioca allegramente sulle rive del torrente Otter o tra le tombe nelle navate dell'antica chiesa gotica di Saint Mary. In seguito alla morte del padre, viene mandato nella scuola dell'Ospedale di Cristo a Londra, gestita dal clero. Fu un assiduo lettore ad un eccellente studente. Nel 1791 va a Cambridge, ma subito interrompe gli studi, per arruolarsi nel reggimento dei dragoni leggeri. Successivamente viene riammesso a Cambridge, dove incontra il poeta Robert Southey (1774- 1843), che lo influenza in modo particolare con la sua simpatetica visione della Rivoluzione francese, tant'è che diventa un fervente repubblicano. Assieme tentano anche di creare una comunità utopica (la "Pantisocracy"), da realizzare in Pennsylvania, basata su principi egualitari e socialisti finalizzata al raggiungimento della pace sociale e di uno sviluppo economico equo per tutti. Il progetto, però, viene abbandonato. Dalla loro amicizia ne scaturisce solo un opera drammatica in versi, The fall of Robenspierre (1794).
Nel 1795 Coleridge incontra William Wordsworth, con cui fa subito amicizia condividendo buona parte della sua visione letteraria e politica. Il risultato massimo della loro collaborazione è il libro Lyrical ballads (1798), che si apre con una delle quattro poesie, scritte da Coleridge, del poemetto The rime of the Ancient Mariner. Egli incomincia anche altre tre ballads, mai completate. La più famosa di queste è Christabel. Inoltre è sempre in questo periodo che scrive Kubla Khan, frutto dei numerosi viaggi procurati da un abuso di oppio. Nel 1798 si reca in Germania con Wordsworth e la sorella Dorothy. Si disillude completamente nei confronti della Rivoluzione francese considerata troppo radicale, quindi sposta la sua attenzione varso la filosofia tedesca, specialmente verso Immanuel Kant. Impara il tedesco, studia filosofia alla Gottingen University e traduce alcune opere di autori come Friedrich von Schiller in inglese.
Nel 1800 torna in Inghilterra, e con Wordsworth va a vivere nella zona del Lake District. Nel frattempo sviluppa una dipendenza dall'oppio, unica via per alleviare i dolorosissimi reumatismi di cui soffre. Nel 1804 parte per Malta, sperando di migliorare la sua situazione fisica in un clima più mite. Lavora per due anni circa come segretario del governatore di Malta, e quindi torna in Inghilterra.
Negli anni che seguono migliora il suo stato di salute. Lavora come giornalista e critico letterario. Nel 1816 pubblica Christabel e Kubla Khan, che lo rendono famoso a tutti gli effetti. Infine, scrive la sua massima opera in prosa Biographia literaria, una serie di dissertazioni circa vari argomenti che spaziano dalla critica letteraria all sociologia.
Muore nel 1834.
