Thomas Harris è nato nel 1940 a Jackson, Mississippi.
Fino al 1974, scriveva di cronaca nera per la newyorkese "Associated Press" dove ha imparato i ferri del mestiere per compiere il passo nella narrativa.
Nel 1975, Harris pubblica Black Sunday, ed è subito best seller: al Tulane Stadium di New Orleans 80.000 persone stanno per assistere al Super Bowl. Tra essi c'è anche il presidente degli Stati Uniti. Ma non sarà un pacifico giorno di festa, perché Settembre Nero, la più spietata organizzazione del terrorismo palestinese, ha deciso di colpire.
Il 1981 è l'anno di Red Dragon (in Italia, prima di una recente ristampa, il titolo prescelto era Il delitto della terza luna). E' il battesimo ufficiale di Hannibal Lecter, che d'ora in avanti sarà per Harris il compagno di viaggio abituale, anche se qui lo troviamo in posizione apparentemente defilata.
In Hannibal, il terzo libro di Thomas Harris, appare lo psichiatra antropofago più famoso del mondo.
Clarice Starling, 7 anni dopo la vicenda Lecter (Silenzio degli innocenti), viene messa sotto accusa dagli organi interni dell'FBI per un intervento troppo energico durante una sparatoria. In questo delicato frangente riceve un messaggio da parte del latitante Lecter, che la incoraggia a tenere duro. Lecter, sparito da anni, vive relativamente tranquillo a Firenze. E' ricercato dall'FBI ma soprattutto da una delle sue vittime, il sadico Mason Vergier, costretto da anni su un letto e orrendamente sfigurato da Lecter stesso. Turbata dal richiamo di Lecter, Clarice decide di salvarlo dalla terribile morte a cui Lecter pare essere predestinato.
