San Tommaso Moro, vero nome Thomas More (7 febbraio 1478 - 6 luglio 1535) fu per un breve periodo Lord Cancelliere d'Inghilterra sotto Re Enrico VIII ed ebbe una reputazione a livello europeo come autore umanista. La sua opera più famosa è L'Utopia (1516 circa) nella quale immagina una società ideale.
Moro nacque a Londra (Inghilterra). Entrò alla corte di Enrico VIII nel 1520 e venne nominato cavaliere nel 1521. La sua carriera come avvocato è celebrata nonostante il fatto che nessuna prova di uno qualsiasi dei casi di cui si occupò sia sopravvissuta. Come studioso fu inizialmente un umanista nel senso più comune del termine. Fu grande amico di Erasmo da Rotterdam che gli dedicò il suo Elogio della follia -- la parola "follia" in greco si pronuncia moria. In seguito le relazioni tra i due si tesero poiché Moro era impegnato nell'ortodossia religiosa, mentre Erasmo cercò di verificare ciò che vedeva come errori intrinseci della dottrina cattolica. Moro fu l'autore di diversi lunghi, e a volte violenti, trattati che attaccavano i riformatori religiosi, fossero essi William Tyndale, Christopher Saint German, Martin Lutero o chiunque altro andasse a dibattere un qualsiasi aspetto dei privilegi della chiesa; fossero essi spirituali (come per l'abilità del clero di redimere il peccato) o temporali (come per il primato della legge canonica sulla legge comune).
Il suo cancellierato (1529-32) non si distinse se non per la sua costante caccia agli eretici e ai loro lavori. Il grande paradosso della vita di Moro è che un uomo visto oggi come un libertario e un libero pensatore, fu al tempo stesso un bigotto.
Il divorzio di Enrico VIII
Il Cardinale Thomas Wolsey, Arcivescovo di York, non riuscì ad ottenere il divorzio e l'annullamento che Enrico aveva cercato e fu costretto a dimettersi nel 1529. Moro venne nominato cancelliere al suo posto. Enrico evidentemente non realizzò le resistenze di Moro su quella questione. Essendo stato ben istruito in diritto canonico, oltre che profondamente religioso - al punto di compiacersi dell'autoflagellazione - Moro considerava l'annullamento del sacramento del matrimonio come una questione all'interno della giurisdizione del Papato, e la posizione di Papa Clemente VII era chiaramente contro il divorzio.
La reazione di Enrico fu quella di mettersi a capo della Chiesa d'Inghilterra. Solo al clero venne richiesto di prestare l'iniziale giuramento di supremazia, dichiarando il sovrano come capo della Chiesa. Moro, in quanto laico, non sarebbe stato soggetto a questo giuramento, ma si dimise da cancelliere il 16 maggio 1532, piuttosto che servire il nuovo regime.
Moro sfuggi ad un tentativo iniziale di collegarlo ad un episodio di tradimento, ma nel 1534 il Parlamento passò l'atto di successione, che includeva un giuramento che (1) riconosceva la legittimità di ogni figlio nato da Enrico ed Anna Bolena, e (2) ripudiava "ogni autorità straniera, principe, o potentato". Come per il "giuramento di supremazia", questo non venne richiesto a tutti i sudditi, ma solo a coloro che vennero specificamente convocati a prestarlo; in altre parole, coloro che rivestivano un incarico pubblico e coloro i quali erano sospettati di non appoggiare Enrico. Moro venne chiamato a prestare giuramento nell'aprile del 1535 e, a causa del suo rifiuto, imprigionato nella Torre di Londra, dove continuò a scrivere. La sua politica fu quella di mantenere il silenzio, che in giurisprudenza si può considerare come un assenso senza spergiurare se stessi. Quando questa mossa fallì venne processato, condannato, incarcerato e quindi giustiziato a Tower Hill il 6 luglio. La sua testa venne mostrata sul London Bridge per un mese, quindi recuperata (dietro pagamento di una bustarella) da sua figlia, Margaret Roper.
Moro venne canonizzato come santo della chiesa cattolica nel 1935. La sua festa è il 22 giugno. Nel 2000, San Tommaso Moro venne dichiarato "Celestiale patrono degli statisti e dei politici" da Papa Giovanni Paolo II.
