Richard Ford è nato nel 1944 a Jackson, Mississippi. E’ considerato uno dei migliori scrittori americani ed è stato definito il “poeta del quotidiano”. Figlio di un commesso viaggiatore scomparso prematuramente, quando Richard aveva sedici anni, Ford ha vissuto la sua infanzia conoscendo ben quattordici stati. Alla morte del padre decide di diventare direttore d’albergo e si laurea alla Michigan State University. Dopo una breve malattia, preso da un impulso improvviso, decide di studiare letteratura. Si mantiene agli studi svolgendo vari lavori, incluso l’agente di polizia e nel 1976 pubblica il suo primo romanzo, A Piece of My Heart, che viene selezionato per l’Ernest Hemingway Award per il miglior romanzo esordiente. Nella sua lunga carriera ha scritto sei romanzi, tra i quali ricordiamo Sportswriters e il suo seguito Il giorno dell’indipendenza, numerosi racconti e alcuni testi teatrali. Ha ricevuto vari premi, tra cui il PEN/Faulkner Award, il Premio Pulitzer per la narrativa per Il giorno dell’indipendenza, il Guggenheim Fellowship e l’American Academy of the Arts and Letters Award for Literature.
