Thomas Kyd (1901-1976), al secolo Alfred Bennett Harbage, nacque a Philadelphia nel 1901. Della sua vita privata non si sa praticamente nulla se non che si sposò nel 1926 con Eliza Finnesey dalla quale ebbe quattro figli. Molto di più, invece, si sa della sua vita accademica, dato che Harbage è ancora oggi ritenuto uno dei più importanti studiosi dell’opera di Shakespeare e del teatro inglese del XVI e XVII secolo. Dopo avere insegnato per più di vent’anni alla University of Pennsylvania – la stessa dove si era laureato – nel 1947 si trasferì alla Columbia University di New York per insegnare letteratura inglese e comparata. Cinque anni più tardi, nel 1952, fu infine chiamato a Harvard dove mantenne una cattedra fino al 1970. Autore di importanti saggi e studi critici sul teatro inglese, tra il 1946 e il 1949 scrisse quattro romanzi gialli, tutti finora inediti in Italia, dei quali Assassinio all’università (Blood Is a Beggar, 1946) è il primo. Lo pseudonimo di Thomas Kyd venne scelto in omaggio a un famoso drammaturgo inglese della seconda metà del 1500.
